Standing inside the canopy of this Magnolia tree I could see an intricate structure that I had never noticed while looking at these trees from afar. The contrast of craggy shapes, almost too rustic for the grace, elegance and softness of the petals, turned out to create a delightful backdrop for the endless clusters of petals. It was very much like looking through a stained glass window.

Stream banks, low moist woods, and floodplains are Virginia Bluebell’s native habitat. They grow in open woods and bottomlands from New York to South Carolina and west to Minnesota, Kansas, and Alabama. It is usually in mid-April in northern Virginia that these native beauties will light up the forest floor along rivers and streams. My “Shenandoah Bluebells” images were captured along the Bluebell Trail in Shenandoah River State Park near Bentonville, Virginia. This one, the first in the series, showcases a delicate little bunch of new blooms, in soft lavender-blue, against a background of sunlit greenery.
